Oats were never ‘my thing’ really until adulthood. Mind you, my mother used to prepare regular rolled oats and I may drink a bit here and there.  However, it was not until I became an adult and more health-conscious that I started to eat more oats and tried to find ways to make it enjoyable, as it is still not my thing. One of the oats I have grown to love is ‘steel cut oats.’  It is denser than rolled oats, chewy, and very filling.  The one that I used is a Gluten-free variety. Here is a simple way to prepare it, for breakfast or any other time of the day Try it nuh!

INGREDIENTS

• 1 cup steel-cut oats.
• 2 cups water (more if needed).
• ½ tsp cinnamon.
• 1 tsp vanilla.
• A little salt.
• ½ cup milk.
• Sweetener of choice.

INSTRUCTIONS

• Soak oats overnight or at least 30 minutes before cooking.
• Throw off the water oats were soaked in and rinse it (like washing rice).
• Add to water in a pot on medium heat.
• Let it cook for a while. (Periodically stirring).
• Add cinnamon, vanilla, and salt.
• Let cook for about 5 more minutes.
• Add milk while stirring.
• Let cook for another 5 to 10 ten minutes.
• Add sweetener.
• Serve and enjoy!

Notes

Letting the oats soak helps to reduce the cooking time as steel-cut oats are denser, as such, they can take a while to cook.  Soaking will increase the volume of the oats, so use less of it if you are just preparing for one (1) person.  Also, you can enjoy this oatmeal alone or add some fruits like ripe bananas, berries, etc.  This will even make it more filling.

~ Steel-Cut Oats~

Steel-cut oats are actually oats groats that have been chopped into small pieces.  Therefore, it is denser than its counterpart – rolled oats as it is minimally processed.  This denseness makes it take a bit longer to cook. As such, without soaking, it can take anywhere from 25 to 30 minutes or even more to cook.

Steel-cut oats are high in fiber and protein and thus create that sense of satiety (fullness). Therefore, it can be a good breakfast idea for those on a weight loss journey or just simply want to maintain an appropriate weight.  It is also said to be a good source of iron and vitamins, especially those of the B-range. 

Steel-cut oats are also said to be able to support healthy blood sugar levels, which might help in reducing one’s risk of diabetes. Additionally, it is also purported to be excellent for gut health as it may be able to promote the growth of good bacteria in the digestive tract.
