How to make Fruit-Infused Water

TABLE OF CONTENTS

Summer is here! And so this is a fun way to jazz up your water as you manage the summer heat. Let’s admit it, sometimes plain ‘ole water is just not cutting it and this is where fruit-infused water comes in.  Adding fruits and herbs to your water can be a great way of taking ‘quenching your thirst’ to the next level.  Here is one of my favourite ways of spicing up my water, plus you get to eat the fruit/s or veggies afterwards. Try it nuh!

INGREDIENTS

  • ½ cup blueberries or any pieces of fruits of your choice.
  • ½ cup cucumber (remove the seed and square or slice).
  • ½ cup melons (remove the seeds and medium sliced).
  • 3 cups water (less, depending on your type of container).
  • Cilantro/Mint leaf (Optional).

DIRECTIONS

  • Add sliced pieces of fruits/veggies into your glass of water (Ensure they are rinsed first). For melon and cucumber, remove the seeds.
  • Let sit for 5-10 minutes (so that the fruits /veggies can be infused into the water)
  • Enjoy it right away or store it in a jar in your Refrigerator.
  • This is best enjoyed ‘chilled.’
Notes:

You can give the fruits a little mix to help with the infusing. Also, use a fork to pierce the fruits and vegetables to release some of the juices and nutritious goodness as well as to help with infusing. You can use one fruit or vegetable, but for this recipe, I used three (3). Remember, you can use fruits of your choice. As such, the possibilities are quite naturally, endless!

Ingredient Spotlight!

~ Watermelon~

Watermelon is a species of the Cucurbitaceae family and is a very highly cultivated fruit globally.  The fruit boast over 1000 varieties.  It is purported to be one of the most hydrating fruits with over 92% water content. As such, a serving of one cup is said to have over 118 ml of water.

Watermelon is said to be high in lycopene, which actually gives the fruit its red colour (the red variety). It is also said to benefit the heart due to the amino acid – citrulline that may be able to help with blood circulation. It is also low in calories and possesses other nutrients such as Vitamin A, B6, Vitamin C, Potassium, Magnesium, Thiamin, and Phosphorus.

Watermelon is also said to protect the joints from inflammation due to its natural pigment – beta-cryptoxanthin.
